Casa Claudia is the other half of Casa Douet, our typical Tuscan hillfarm, parts of which date back to 1641. Nestling in an olive grove overlooking the village of Pietrabuona with spectacular views of chestnut forests and neighbouring hill villages, its tranquillity is broken only by birdsong and the sound of a distant stream....yet the treasures of Florence are just one hour away! Recently restored and modernised, but retaining original chestnut beamed ceilings and cotto floors, Casa Claudia has been converted into two self contained apartments - both with completely separate recreation areas on different terrace levels. The larger, "Appartamento Grande", which occupies the top floors of Casa Claudia comprises: first floor huge kitchen/dining room (6m x 5m) with open fire, built in fridge/freezer, gas oven and hob, dishwasher, double sink, microwave; study/sitting room with desk and hifi; double bedroom. Top floor - master bedroom (same size as kitchen) with four poster bed and en suite bathroom (WC, hand basin, shower recess); a twin bedded room; second bathroom (WC, handbasin, bathtub with shower over). Bedlinen and towels are provided weekly. A cot and high chair are available. Beach towels are also available. Every room is centrally heated. There is a private outdoor recreation area under a vine-covered pergola next to an ornamental pool. A barn on the ground floor has been converted into a laundry with washing machine, iron and ironing board, storage for deck chairs, hammocks and a portable barbecue, which - together with the pool (being installed Spring 2007) and large parking area under walnut and cherry trees is shared with the smaller Studio Appartamento. Own transport is essential. Amenities close by: seaside one hour away, 18 hole golf course at the famous Montecatini spa town(14km), Abetone ski resort (60km), plus, nearer home, tennis/squash courts, pony trekking, mountain walks, numerous historic villas and gardens (Pescia is home to the second largest flower market in Europe), colourful street markets .. and many excellent and inexpensive restaurants. Distances: 3.5km (includes 1.7km well maintained private road) to nearest village, Pietrabuona, with post office, petrol station, butcher, general store, bar and restaurant. 10 mins to nearest market town, Pescia, with railway and bus stations,hospital, banks, supermarkets etc. 40 mins to Lucca - a walled medieval gem. One hour by car to Pisa International airport. One hour and a quarter to Viareggio seaside resort; one and a half hours to marble/sculpture centre of Carrara/Pietrasanta; two hours north west to the coastal villages of the Cinque Terra, north east to Bologna International airport, or south to Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra; 3 hours to Rome; 3.5 hours to Milan and 4 hours to Venice.
