About the SURROUNDINGS: The nearest village is Castelvecchio (10 min. walk), pinned like a painting on top of the mountain. Here you will find a bar and a little shop selling basic essentials. The Castelvecchio region has several excellent and inexpensive restaurants. Castelvecchio is one of the chain of ten mediaeval villages making up the 'Dieci Castella', situated along the valley of the Torbola and Forfora. The landscape is outstandingly beautiful and the whole region is a designated “Protected Area” where no new building construction is allowed. As well as the roads, these villages are interconnected by footpaths making "Il Colle" an ideal centre for trekking and walking holidays. You will find typical Tuscan cuisine and excellent wines. Seven kilometers down the valley lies PESCIA, the nearest market town with shops, a hospital, banks, supermarkets, a railway station, bus depot and a Saturday street-market on the Piazza Mazzini. Pescia is a centre for cut-flower and olive tree cultivation. Travelling time from Pescia to Florence and Pisa, either by car or by train is approx. one hour. Both cities have international airports and car hire facilities. There are beach–resorts at Viareggio and Lido di Camaiore (40 km). Nearer at hand is the beautiful walled city of Lucca and the thermal bath/spa centre Montecatini Terme, which also offers an 18–hole golf course. Although there are several buses daily, your own transport is essential.
